_ 276 _ possession of the city of Aden on behalf of our said Lord and to deliver that city in the name of His Highness to the King and do, together with him, all those things necessary in the name of the King, our Lord. And as in similar cases it is appropriate that he should exercise authority and jurisdiction over those he carries with him, I hereby grant him jurisdiction in case of crimes committed by any person who is not a captain, noble or servant of the said gentlemen, including the right to execute them. In the case of those who are nobles or servants of His Highness who commit any crimes for which they should be punished in justice, he shall have the right to arrest them and have them make statements concerning their offences to a clerk who will accompany him for this purpose; and he will have them sent to me under arrest and well guarded, with the statements regarding their offences, in order that justice be done. I hereby grant him authority and jurisdiction so that if such cases occur, he may impose fines of up to fifty cruzados and four year’s exile. In these matters. and subject to the limits here defined, he will impose sentences on criminals and ensure that they are carried out. And in criminal cases I grant him authority and jurisdiction to apply fines of fifty thousand reis;
