The Portuguese in the Sea of Oman

_ 279 _ The Captain sent D. Paio de Noronha to Aden. D. Paio was afraid that the Turks would return and sent a ship with the Sheikh’s uncle aboard as Ambassador to conclude the terms of the alliance with the Governor, and to request reinforcements. The Governor, according to Gaspar Correia, arranged processions “with much praise to Our Lord for such kindness”. (Correia, Lendas IV p 631) and then proceeded to send his son to Aden with a fleet. I, D. João de Crastro (sic) of the King our Lord’s Council, his Commander in Chief in these parts of India, etc., hereby order the factors and officers of the fortresses of Chaul, Bassein and Diu, and any other factor or officer of the said Lord, that as my son, D. Alvaro de Crastro, whom I am sending to Aden with a fleet, may order, they furnish him with all the provisions necessary for the fleet accompanying him. And that in accordance with the present order and the copy of it recorded in the books at the factories and in his orders, I hereby instruct the bookkeepers of this same gentleman that they take account of the provisions and all the other items necessary for the fleet, and that receipt thereof be confirmed by the captains to whom all these items are delivered. Made by Bastilão. Días in Bassein, 23rd February 1548.
