The Portuguese in the Sea of Oman

_ 315 _ D.João de Ataide reported that he had encountered a carrack in sight of Aden, which he attacked until he drove it inside the bar of Aden. During the fighting one of the three foists he was leading, commanded by Gomes da Silva, had caught fire, and the sail, many lascars and most of the seamen were burnt. All this was very late one day, and the next day before dawn, not knowing that the Turks were in Aden, he had entered under oars. The ships were all be flagged, and when he was quite close to the city he came under heavy cannon and musket-fire from inside the city, and four or five galleys came out, carrying many soldiers and guns. As soon as they realized that they were Turks they had rowed to windward of them and escaped. There was a great deal of other information, which is not written here so as not to be too long. All the captains and fidalgos of this fleet thought it was best to make for Qishn, to do as the Governor orders in his standing orders. As all were agreed, they signed here with D.Alvaro on today’s date as above. D.Alvaro de Castro [...] Mariz, D.António Noronha, Duarte Leite, Pero Lopes de Sousa, Simão de Sousa de Faria, Francisco da Cunha,
