The Portuguese in the Sea of Oman

_ 140 _ court waiting for a reply to the business on which I came, the woman’s husband, the Zeide, arrived here to complain to Shah Tahmasp that the Portuguese had taken four or five thousand pardaos from him, here and in Chaul, and that they had taken his wife to make her a Christian, as in fact happened, and that before his very eyes they were sleeping with her in a house where wine was sold; and that the Portuguese had told him that they were doing these things because she was related to Muhammad. He made all these complaints here. Shah Tahmasp at once became very angry and sent the principal men of his council to tell me to write at once to Ormuz and to India, that his wife was to be sent back. Neither I nor those who were with me were to return until the woman was here; and he is ordering Ibrahim Khan and the King of Lara and the Lord of Karaman that if his wife is not returned, they are to attack and seize the territory of Ormuz and lay siege to Ormuz itself. This is what Shah Tahmasp has commanded. As this is a matter that concerns our holy faith, I do not know what to say to Your Reverence nor what to ask that can be done about it. May Our Lord help us. I am only worried about the people I have here1 with me, and
