_ 186 _ He was afraid that the masses might revolt, because of the great love they had for me, so he invited me to eat. Then, just as he was beginning to state his reason, he unexpectedly suffered a fatal accident and from then on he had no further interest in the Alcoran. The base Christians who instigated this affair, on behalf of the Moors, died soon afterwards and others disappeared and were never heard of again. May God forgive them, quia servierunt creaturae potius quam creator. [because they served a creature rather than the Creator] Orate pro eis. [ Pray for them] We now live in great peace and the Church of Christ here is growing quickly. The people are very devout and perform many penances. Every Friday they join in procession and chant the litanies. When this is over, I preach in the countryside about the ever-mysterious Passion of Christ. People come in great numbers to these processions. Every day, I teach the catechism to the children and preach to the adults three times on Sundays and feasts: in the morning, in the main church; in the evening, for the male and female slaves, when the people also attend; and to the suffering poor in the hospital. The priests are very fervent and at the moment it seems to me to be like the time of the primitive church.
