_ 278 _ After the captain had heard what he had to say he gave orders for him to be held. He put the matter to the Council, pointing out the difficulties that they faced and the shortage of everything. After a debate they all agreed “that captain João de Lisboa should go with a Jesuit father living there to meet Piri Reis and negotiate the terms with him, and what these decided, they would consider as settled”. Whereupon, they both went with the renegade João da Barca to the Pasha, who received them very well. When they were seated, the Pasha treated them with great affability and told them that: “in that matter he wanted no greater honour than for the Grand Turk to know that he had captured a fortress from the Portuguese, and that he assured the lives and liberties of all those within, so that they could go wherever they chose”. He spoke at such length about this that João de Lisboa accepted the terms and the Pasha made out a detailed safe-conduct for him in the name of the Turk. At this, João de Lisboa gave orders to all who were in the fort to come to him immediately, which they did. When the Pasha had them all with him, he broke his word, like all Turks do, and set all of them to row in the galleys.
