The Portuguese in the Sea of Oman

_ 369 _ Brothers pious and good. They were expecting Master Gaspar [Barzeu], who was coming from Ormuz on his way to Japan, with hopes that we might all go. Now we are waiting to see if any Brothers are called, because Fr Master Francisco had written that if the was an opening we should all be sent. Fr. António was here for seven or eight days and then he was sent to Cochin to preach. Fr Master Gonçalo Ruis for some days, and was sent off to Ormuz, where Fr Master Gaspar had been. He came bringing three very pious Brothers. He is tireless of spirit and a great servant of God. There was great rejoicing at his arrival, but before he came to the house he preached at a place near the bar. Since he has been here we have had sung Mass every Sunday, and when the offertory is over he takes off his chasuble and goes to preach, and when he has finished preaching he says Mass again, and two hours later, after he has dined, he walks through the city, ringing the bell as he used to do in Ormuz. When the blacks come he talks to them and teaches them Christian doctrine. Many people confess, and this is a great thing in these parts.
