_ 79 _ I found some usurers who are hard to move who, to conceal their usury from me, add together the capital that they lend and the interest in one account, claiming in statements they made So-and-so received so much, which was borrowed from me. But in a homily, I condemned all notaries and witnesses who allowed usurers to do this, as a result of which there was great improvement. The third sin I found here was dealing in weapons with Moors and Turks and our enemies, all of whom are excommunicated from the Coena Domini. Because this and sulphur are the best lines of trade in this country, I have found many damned and contaminated by it, so that I discoursed at length on this in teaching, and had many confessions and great restitutions and penances. The chapter on freeing the Holy Land from Jews and Saracens orders corporal punishment for those who have not the wherewithal to pay, and the punishment of those who can pay is to contribute as much of their wealth as they gained for a crusade, and if they do not have it, according to the doctors the punishment depends on the Camera Apostolica. In these matters, and in usury, I saw much negligence in India, and the Bishop temporized, and everyone gave absolution for this without having power to do so, some by the bulls of the Sacrament, and others by
