_ 85 _ To return to my subject (forgive, I beg you, my eager mind) I had to find some other way to be severe with these people, so that they would not harm the others. When I preached I made great speeches and protests and threats before the Lord, about delighting the enemy and at the end of the sermon I asked the congregation for three Paternosters and three Ave Marias for those who behaved in that way, so that Our Lord would touch them in the parts where they would feel it most, in their property and worldly goods, or in their reputation, or in body, breaking their hands and feet, arms, etc. They should even lose their lives that their soul might be saved: cover their faces with shame, O lord, so that they may know thy name. This threw them into great confusion, fearing that some of these things would happen to them, and they were very angry. But afterwards I told them the reason why I did this, and that the things I was asking God to put an end to were things that would do them harm for their salvation; because if I were not rich I would perhaps not be proud, if I were not healthy I would not fight; it is better to enter into glory with one eye and one foot than to descend into hell with two, and this is why I asked that some harm might befall their limbs and property.
