TALE OF A CITY 138 arrested. At the time, Sheikh Sultan bin Saqr had gone out to the Falaj area, outside Sharjah. Mr Pelly left Sharjah on board the HMS Wren at 4.00 PM on 24 July 1948 heading back to his place of work in Bahrain.3 After leaving the Agency Sultan bin Salimwent to a nearby house occupied by a member of the Ibn Huraiz family. He knocked on the door and told the occupants that he wanted to take refuge in their house till sunset as he thought that the Agency guards would follow him. In the meantime he loaded his pistol and, seeing that no one had followed him, he went away and is reported to have entered the house of Khalid bin Khalid al-Qasimi, nephewof the Sheikhof Sharjah.KhalidbinKhalid resentedhis presence in his house and sent word to the Sheikh of Sharjah reporting Sultan’s presence in his house and asking him, to make arrangements for his removal. Sultan bin Salim was then removed to Muhammad bin Saqr’s house where he was cared for and housed in the guesthouse. This was owing to the fact that Sheikh Sultan Bin Salim was married to Shaikha Aisha bin Saqr al-Qasimi, sister of both Sheikh Sultan bin Saqr and Sheikh Muhammad bin Saqr. Next day (i.e. 24th July), arrangements were made by SheikhMuhammad bin Saqr for Sultan bin Salim’s escape from Sharjah. Two camels belonging to Rashid bin Mani’ were borrowed and Sultan bin Salim was sent away on them with an escort of two of the Beni Qitab, named Abdullah bin Silumah and Ibn Khisom and his own slave al-Ramis. There Sultan bin Salim was joined by a guardof the ShaikhofHirahnamed SalihBal Irshad and aQitabi named Rashid bin Mutraq as-Saman who was a military escort working for Sheikh Sultan bin Saqr. Salih Bal Irshad was an acquaintance of Sharjah Political Agent, Jasim alKazmawi. When Salih was asked to come to the house of SheikhMuhammad bin Saqr, he was told that he was going to accompany Sheikh Sultan bin Salem. Salih’s way that day was past the Agency House where he met Jasim al-Kazmawi. The later told Salih that Sheikh Sultan bin Salem was in the house of Sheikh Muhammad bin Saqr al-Qasimi.
