TALE OF A CITY 154 know if this should be done ” 10 The British Political Officer in Sharjah, Patrick Stobart, was the person in charge of the accommodation arrangements in Sharjah aerodrome. He wrote two reports to the political Resident, Bahrain, and included the following information:11 Report (1) This report was in the formof list of the Near East Air Transport Co., (later known as Middle East-Sharjah Airways) flights which landed in Sharjah on certain dates. None of those landings were authorized. Stobart’s report also included the following points: • The Near East flights between Lydda and Sharjah, Karachi, Bombay, Hong Kong and return were well-organized as shown between 25 April-22 September 1950. • The external flight to Hong Kong continued somewhat empty in order to take such passengers in Sharjah and Karachi, who wanted to go to Bombay. • The flights were not few in number. • In the return journey, the Near East aircraft carried, in addition to its crew, no other passengers except Jewish emigrees to Israel. • In every occasion, the planes were at full capacity. • Rented flights were organized for this purpose, but the organizer is unknown. Report (2) In this report Stobart stated that he saw, on at least one occasion, some papers, but did not take copies. A passenger list was obtained.
