57 As soon as Sharjah was confirmed to be Smallpox-free, the appointed Political Agent, Khan Sahib Abdulrazzaq al-Ruzuqi, was called upon to go to Sharjah to undertake the responsibilities of his new post. He arrived to the Agency on 16 May 1936.1 The former Political Agent, Eissa Abdullatif, had his own residence in Sharjah which he used as both his home as well as place of work. However, with the arrival of al-Ruzuqi arose the problem of finding an appropriate office for him. The new Agent found a house in Sharjah that needed some improvements in order to make a suitable place of living and work for him and his clerk. It also had waiting rooms. The monthly rent was 40 Rupees and the modifications required were going to cost 200 Rupees.2 The landlord, however, refused to carry out the modifications needed himself. Some negotiations followed and Sheikh SultanbinSaqr al-Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah, expressed his readiness to build a suitable house for the Political Agent which could be used as both a residence and office, in a prime healthy location overlooking the Sharjah Creek. He was willing to rent it out to the Agent for 50 Rupees a month provided that the lease was to be for 5 years.3 1 I.O.R./ L.P. &S/12/3626, pp.24−27,3843, P.Z.614/1936 2 Ibid., L.P.&S/12/362x,x.Z.7331x1936. 3 Ibid., L.P.&S/1x/3626, P.Z.2796/19x7, p.4.
