Fearing the consequences, he dared not travel to Isfahan and instead returned to his hometown of Yerevan, arriving by the end of May 1717. Adding to his troubles, Mohammad Reza Bey had been forced to sell several of the gifts, sent by King Louis XIV to the Shah, to cover his travel expenses. These matters tormented him to such an extent that, three weeks after arriving in Yerevan, he poisoned himself, preempting the inevitable fate that awaited him had he gone to the capital.
