His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, is set to launch his latest historical work next Thursday: The Portuguese in the Sea of Oman: Annals of History 1497 CE- 1757 CE, published by Al Qasimi Publications.
The book will be published in twenty-one volumes, in both Arabic and English, with each volume comprising between 400 and 600 pages—amounting to a total of approximately 10,500 pages. Each volume features a curated collection of documents and letters, with the complete series encompassing a total of 1,138 historical documents.
The book is arranged chronologically, with each volume documenting the events of a specific year in the form of annals. Every volume includes a research index at the end, accompanied by detailed footnotes for the included documents. This historical work extends beyond the reproduction of letters and archival materials—it also features complete books and rare writings by Portuguese authors, published here for the first time.
It is regarded as an invaluable historical treasure, meticulously documenting critical and transformative events that unfolded in the Sea of Oman. Spanning 260 years, the work chronicles battles and key developments, unveiling historical truths disclosed for the first time—supported by rigorous academic research and comprehensive analysis.
Through this work, readers embark on a journey through time, gaining rare insight into the events and experiences of the era as recorded by Portuguese authors in their correspondences, letters, and publications. The book offers a vivid portrayal of the political, economic, and social landscape, along with the prevailing conditions in the Sea of Oman region during that historical period.
This monumental scholarly achievement stands as a valuable and enriching contribution to both Arab and international libraries, presenting historical facts and perspectives that have long remained hidden within archives and private collections.
An interview with His Highness, the Ruler of Sharjah, discussing the new release will be broadcast on Sharjah TV and the “Maraya” app of the Sharjah Broadcasting Authority on Thursday at 2:00 PM. The English-language version of the interview will air the same day at 9:00 PM, with repeat broadcasts scheduled for Friday at 1:30 AM and again at 2:00 PM.
