His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, inaugurated the first phase of the new Khorfakkan Road on Saturday in the presence of Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Crown Prince of Sharjah and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah. The first phase, which is 89-km long, cost Dhs5.5 billion.
Sheikh Sultan reiterated importance of the road, which witnessed various difficulties during the work phases in terms of digging and building tunnels in the high mountains. It has the longest mountain tunnel in the Middle East, which is 2,700 meters long.
The Ruler of Sharjah further unveiled a number of developmental and important projects in Khorfakkan, which are expected to be completed by the end of this, including the waterfront projects, Khorfakkan Corniche, Al-Loualiyah Beach and Zubara.
He explained that the emirate are harnessing all powers to serve and thrill the citizen, noting that the Government of Sharjah will bear the annual rent of 300 citizens who live in houses and flats in Khorfakkan until they receive their houses from the government. They are beneficiaries of housing grants in the emirate.
On the occasion of opening this road, Sheikh Sultan set April 14 to be “Eid Khorfakkan, on which celebrations will be held in the city. There are more surprises for the people of Khorfakkan that will be announced at the end of 2018, Sheikh Sultan added.
