Sultan.. the Conscience and Guard of the Fiftieth Year of Culture

When referring to a beautiful conclusion, and a word of truth and justice, it is necessary to return to His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, at the beginning and end of the discussion about the “cultural fiftieth mark” in the United Arab Emirates.

His Highness … His cultural Highness is the founder of the Sharjah Cultural Project, the most important pillar of the cultural fiftieth mark. Hene, talking about culture in the Emirates in its national fifties takes us to two approaches … The first is His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah and his direct cultural role in the Emirati culture. The second is the Sharjah Cultural Project which cannot be ignored, neither locally, nor in the Gulf, nor in the Arab world, nor globally, when talking about the cultural fiftieth in the Emirates.

The participation and partnership of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah in the place and prestige of culture in the Emirates is firstly represented in the cultural, literary, historical, theatrical, and novel aspects of his personality. The personality of the writer who insisted on himself as a writer despite the obligations and duties of the ruler in this respected cultural personality among Arab and international cultural circles.

As everyone knows, His Highness, the Ruler of Sharjah provided the UAE’s ‘Year of the 50th’ with historical plays that he wrote with a projective vision that is balanced between the past and the present in order to interpret history, and not only to read it, but also to draw lessons, wisdom and intellectual, moral and literary conclusions from it.

His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah accompanied the UAE's cultural ‘Year of the 50th’ with books on the history of the region, Arab and Islamic history, and enhanced his historical research material with references, encyclopedias, information, maps, and manuscripts that His Highness searched for in international libraries and research and academic institutions. He acquired them and made them available to researchers in the sciences of history, geography, and scientific and literary knowledge in general.

In regard to novel, we find the name of His Highness, the Ruler of Sharjah, present in the history of Emirati literature, and it is once again a historical novel that is consistent with the research nature of his highness. It also specifies its literary narrative specificity in Emirati culture.

His Highness wrote in his autobiography about the biography of man, the story of the place, and books of poetry. His inaugural speeches on theater days and book fairs form a transparent base for his personal cultural project.

This is on the level of the personal preoccupation of His Highness, the Ruler of Sharjah, as an historian, writer, educator and a man of theatre that follows every small and large thing in the local cultural diaries. As for the second level, it is the Sharjah Cultural Project which started practically in the 70’s. Henceforth, it could be said that this cultural, intellectual, and literary project completes its fiftieth year in 2021 in total convergence with the UAE’s Year of the 50th.

The Sharjah Cultural Project in its fiftieth and in the UAE’s ‘Year of the fiftieth’ is the founding root of the Sharjah International Book Fair, which turned into an independent cultural institution in its administrative framework: the Sharjah Book Authority, then the Sharjah Publishing City, and in the general framework of this project: the Arab Theater Authority, Arabic Poetry, and the literary awards.

When observing the Sharjah Cultural Project, one does not overlook the mother institution of this project, which is the Sharjah Department of Culture. It is the luminous lantern in the sky of this project.
